Fairwell and Thank you - Reflecting on my time as Chapter Chair

Dear ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Members,

As I wrap up my final weeks as Chapter Chair, I’ve found myself reflecting on the incredible journey these past few years have been. Serving as Chapter Chair has been an honor, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this vibrant community of security professionals.

From my experience, ASIS International is truly the place to be for security professionals seeking to advance their careers through networking, education, and collaboration. Our chapter is a shining example of the value ASIS brings to its members, and it has been a privilege to witness the dedication, professionalism, and camaraderie within this group.

I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks to Wade Mathews, who was my first introduction to the Kansas City Chapter back in 2018, shortly after my family and I moved to the area. As a newcomer, Wade welcomed me, introduced me to so many fantastic people, and set me on a path of engagement and growth within ASIS:

2024 Security Professional and Security Officer of The Year - Nomination Forms

It is that time of the year when we have the opportunity to nominate a local security officer and security professional for our ASIS Kansas City Chapter awards.

Security Professional of the Year

This award recognizes a member of the security profession, with a minimum of ten years’ experience, who continually exhibits leadership ability within the security profession. The recipient practices mentoring, fosters the education of those new to the security profession and is a participant in the security community as demonstrated through active membership in professional security organizations.

Nomination Form

Security Officer of the Year

To recognize a Kansas City area Security Officer who excelled in the discharge of their duties by taking exemplary on-duty action to protect life and/or property.

Any individual working in a paid position, directly and primarily responsible for providing security-related services to persons and/or property. Law enforcement officers and Security Administrators are not eligible for this award.

Criteria:

1) Show outstanding performance and/or achievement while on duty.

2) Demonstrate professionalism while on duty.

3) Provides an elevated level of customer service while on duty.

Word From the Chairman

Greetings fellow chapter members,

Another month down and the year is flying by. We hope that all our members are finishing the summer off with some fun family activities. Thank you to all who continue to support the chapter and attend our monthly meetings. This past month, we made some significant and exciting changes in the chapter leadership; you can read about in the below section. Next month, September, is GSX! We encourage all members to participate, either virtually or in person. For those who are attending in person, we will try to get together for group photo, so stay tuned.

As the year is moving along, the board is thinking about 2024. If you have some ideas or suggestions on how the chapter could be better and more valuable to its members, we want to hear from you! Also, if you have that feeling in your gut that you could volunteer on the board or on a committee, please let us know! Contact us at info@kcasis.org. Until next time!

August Chapter Meeting

We had a great chapter meeting at the Kansas City Art Institute with a presentation by the Director of Safety and Security, Michael Raunig. Thank you for hosting us! We also got to swear in our new Chapter Secretary, Brock Josephson, PSP, with TEECOM.

We have a solid agenda planned out for the rest of the year and hope to see our local Kansas City security professionals at the next event in October. See you in September at GSX in Dallas!

September Chapter Meeting

As mentioned above, the chapter will not hold an event in September and will encourage all members to attend ASIS GSX in Dallas, TX (virtually or physically) from September 11-13. Details can be found HERE.

Chapter Leadership Announcements

Chapter Secretary

The chapter has voted Brock Josephson, Principal Consultant at TEECOM, as the new 2023 Chapter Secretary. Brock will serve in this position until the end of the year, at which time the chapter will hold a vote for the 2024 board. Congratulations, Brock, and thank you for your service!

New Chapter Committee

We are happy to announce the creation of a new chapter committee that would be called the “Social and Networking Events” committee. We are pleased to announce that this committee will be chaired by Terry Owens, Director of Security at Shamrock Trading Co. We are also happy to announce that Jeremy Bain, FDA Special Agent, and Caleb Morris, Business Development Manager at Titan Protection, have volunteered to be members on this committee. We are excited to see the fun and valuable social and networking events that this new committee will plan for our chapter members! More information and details to be shared on this effort.

Hello, ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Members,

I sincerely hope that everyone is off to a fantastic summer and have some fun summer trips planned. Last month in June, we had our annual Physical Security Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony, and it was the biggest one yet! Thank you to all those who attended, especially our vendor sponsors. If you missed it, we hope to see you next year! More information about the event will be in the next section. Historically, the chapter has taken a break in July since so many of our members are out on vacations. This year we will continue this practice and will not hold a chapter event in July. Our next chapter event will be in August. Additional information can be found in the corresponding section below.

Physical Security Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony

Protecting the Kansas City Art Institute

Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Kansas City Art Institute is located at 4415 Warwick Boulevard, Kansas City MO 64111. The meeting will be in DeBruce Hall, rooms 102 and 103.

The program will include a presentation from the Director of Safety and Security, Mike Raunig. Mike will provide an overview of the physical, technical, and operational security measures that work together to protect the Institute's primary assets.

Free GSX All-Access Pass

Each year, ASIS International provides all chapters with one (1) complimentary GSX All-Access Pass registration; this year, the selected chapter member will be able to attend either the in-person event in Dallas, Texas, or through the virtual experience. GSX will take place from September 11th to 13th, 2023, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. Learn more about GSX here.

The Chapter Board is pleased to award this All-Access Pass registration to one of our chapter members. Below is the eligibility and criteria:

The member should be active within the Greater Kansas City Chapter by having attended previous chapter events throughout the year.
The member should otherwise not be able to attend GSX due to the costs and where the member’s employer does not sponsor the member for this conference.
The member should, in good faith, have open plans to attend GSX, so that this free All-Access pass is not wasted.

Furthermore, ASIS International provides their own criteria and eligibility requirements also, list below:

The recipient must be an ASIS member in good standing and affiliated with the chapter at the time of submission.
The same individual member may not receive this complimentary registration for more than three consecutive years.
If the selected individual has already registered, the paid registration will automatically be refunded.
Regional leaders (SRVP, RVP, ARVP) are eligible to participate in this program; Global/Regional Board of Directors are ineligible.
The chapter must have a 2023 Chapter Questionnaire on file with ASIS HQ.

If you are interested in this free All-Access Pass, please email the chapter board at info@kcasis.org by Monday, July 17th. In the email to the Chapter Board, the member must include a brief narrative explaining their situation and how they meet the eligibility and criteria requirements.

The chapter board will review the submissions and will select a chapter member who best meets the above listed criteria. All members will be notified if they are selected or not.

Security LeadHer Conference

ASIS International and Security Industry Association hosted the inaugural LeadHER conference on June 12-13, 2023, in Nashville, Tennessee. The LeadHER conference was created and designed to advance, connect, and empower women in security. Our very own Tess Schorr (Wesco) and Brandee Gary (Children's Mercy Hospital) were two of the hundreds of attendees.

Hello, ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Members,

I hope that this newsletter finds you all well and healthy. We had a great month in April with a very well attended chapter meeting (over 50 registrants!) hosted at the Overland Park, KS PD Myron Scafe Station. Our guest speaker was Christopher Staley, an attorney from Sanders Warren & Russell, who taught us on premises liability. Our more recent event on May 4th (may the fourth be with you) was held at Shamrock Towers with a presentation by Titan Protection on the technology and benefits of remote monitoring services. Many thanks to Titan Protection for sponsoring our May event.

Now, I have an urgent request: I invite you all to register for our June event, the chapter’s annual Physical Security Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony. Details can be found below and also at this link. We switched up the venue this year and will be at the DoubleTree in Overland Park, KS. We are also bringing in an amazing keynote speaker, Clint Emerson. After you register, please invite another colleague to register as well. Law enforcement outreach

The Kansas City Chapter wants to extend a big thank you to Dr. Christopher Walker from Texas Christian University for meeting with several law enforcement officers aspiring to retire and transition into the private security profession. Dr. Walker delivered the keynote address at the chapter's annual Physical Security Showcase event and elected to stay an additional night to sit down with officers from around the Kansas City metro. The event was coordinated by Terry Owens, and accompanied by Michael Betten, CPP (KC LE Liaison) and John J. Riotte.

Law Enforcement Agencies represented included North Kansas City, Overland Park, Kansas City MO and the United States Army. The evening provided a wealth of information for the participants, a chance to network and thoroughly enjoy everyone's stories. Dr. Walker's insight and experience offered a wealth of information to those in attendance. We encourage all chapters to do the same as the experience was one to remember.

Discuss the primary drug trend problems in the United States, regardless of what community you live in. The opioid crisis and the flood of other drugs has reached epidemic proportion in many of our communities. Learn more about this national challenge and other emerging drug trends. Drug traffickers are intentionally adding fentanyl to a variety of drugs. Observe examples of current emerging drugs in various forms.

Upon completion of this webinar, you will be able to:

· Gain knowledge in drug trends, primarily methamphetamine & opioids

· Gain an understanding of the drug fentanyl, what it is and its potency

· Know which drugs are being cut with fentanyl

Gil Van Attenhoven has over 29 years of law enforcement experience. He began his career with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department and spent the next 26 years with the CA Department of Justice, Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE). He held assignments in the Los Angeles and Redding Field Offices, was a Drug Task Force Commander and the Commander of the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) program, a statewide marijuana eradication task force. He retired as a Sr. Special Agent in Charge for DOJ. He spent the last six years as the Director of Training for the CA Narcotic Officers’ Association (CNOA). He is currently an instructor for the Department of Defense Counterdrug programs (MCTC, RCTA, WRCTC), the COPS Office, Bureau of Justice Assistance, CNOA and NCJTC. He was the president of CNOA in 2009 and a Lifetime Member. He also graduated from the FBI National Academy, Class 2009. He was appointed to the CA Commission on POST by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Word From the Chairman

I hope this newsletter continues to find all of our chapter members, friends, and families safe and healthy. As the weather is warming up and the country is opening up we are looking forward to the time we can meet together. We will continue to have virtual events for the first half of 2021, but we are looking to start having in person meetings starting in August. We are excited for the upcoming events; we have lined up some exciting speakers. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting.

Our guest presenters Timothy Sutton, CPP,PSP,CHPA and Carrie Goetz gave a presentation as an introduction to the cannabis industry holistically across the globe. Included was a brief touch on some of the requirements pertaining to the local area and ideas for how to get work in the industry.

WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN

As we enter our 61^st year, I hope that our members, colleagues, families, and friends continue to stay healthy and safe. 2020 has been a challenging year, but the Board is excited to start our next chapter. This year we are going to continue to bring value to our chapter by inviting interesting and informative speaker, but look forward to conduct in-person events. We hope to have our first in-person event in August, dependent on City, State and CDC guidelines.

We are looking for volunteers to join our chapter committees. This is a great way to participate and support the chapter. Each committee can have more than one person on the team, in fact, it is encouraged. From my experience with the ASIS KC Chapter, the more that I'm involved, the more I receive in return. WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN

60th Anniversary 1960 - 2020

I hope that our members, colleagues, families, and friends continue to stay healthy and safe. It feels that we are now in a new normal, things are opening up but with new protocols. GSX+ took place completely online, schools have opened in-person, virtually and hybrid, and businesses are learning how to operate in this new environment. Even our beloved Royals and Chiefs have taken the field, with minimum fans in the seats.

This month we had the opportunity to honor and present the Clarence M. Kelley Award to Chief Thomas Hongslo, Lenexa, KS Police Department. Bill Carroll, Chapter Vice-Chair presented the award with Kansas City Crime Commission President, Rick Armstrong. The presentation was recorded and presented at the Crime Commission virtual annual luncheon ceremony.

The chapter was honored at the recent GSX+ with the Best Website Award, and was runner-up for Best Newsletter Award. This year has been challenging, but we have continued to persevere to be the best chapter possible. The chapter board looks forward to the time when we can all meet again in person, sometime in mid-2021. We will continue to plan and host informative events and find ways where we can socialize virtually. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing everyone at our next virtual event.

The Greater Kansas City ASIS Chapter held the 2020 Award Ceremony at the World War I Museum and Memorial. Parkville Police Chief Chrisman and Chapter Chair Rick Dunn presented the following Awards.

SEPTEMBER

Julia Pearson, Manager of Security operations, Security Infrastructure, and Physical Access Management was the guest speaker for the September Chapter meeting. She reviewed and shared how American Family Insurance (AFI) developed its own in-house Threat, Vulnerability, and Risk Assessment (TVRA) program. She explained the pros and cons of formulating and conducing an in-house program vs. hiring an external 3^rd party vendor (security consultant) to conduct the assessments.

NEWS FROM CHAPTER COMMITTEES

A major chapter function that we will commence with the October Luncheon is opening the election for the 2021 board. Most of the 2020 board would like to continue our tenure on the chapter board. Due to work commitments, Sean Burns is stepping down as Chapter Secretary, and Jared Oakden would like to transition to that position. If anyone is interested in the open Chapter Treasurer position or would like to run for Chapter Chair, Vice-Chair, or Secretary please send an email to chairman@kcasis.org. We will put your name on the ballot, and open the online voting 15 October.

60th Anniversary 1960 - 2020

I hope that our members, colleagues, families, and friends continue to stay healthy and safe during these challenging times. Just when you thought things couldn't get stranger, June happened. We have finished our fourth month dealing with COVID-19 in Kansas City, and the new normal is starting to settle in. It feels like a life time ago that we had our last in person chapter luncheon, hopefully in August we will be able to have an in-person event. 2020 is half way over, but the Chapter is still striving to provide engaging topics and events. The board and I appreciate everyone's patience and support as we continue to find novel ways to provide quality presentations and events for the chapter.

The Greater Kansas City Chapter is not the only organization to be affected by the Corona virus. GSX is transitioning to a virtual-only environment for its 2020 event, GSX+ is a fully virtual experience that includes CPE-eligible education sessions, a robust Marketplace (virtual exhibit hall), and peer-to-peer networking. I hope that our members, colleagues, families, and friends continue to stay healthy and safe during these challenging times. We have finished our third month
dealing with COVID-19 in Kansas City. It feels like a life time ago that we
had our last in person chapter luncheon. The board and I appreciate
everyone's patience and support as we continue to find novel ways to
provide quality presentations and events for the chapter.

Sadly, we have had a loss to our Greater Kansas City Law Enforcement family. Officer Mike Mosher, with the Overland Park Police Department, was killed while investigating a hit-and-run incident he witnessed while on the way to work. For those who would like to make a donation in memory of Officer Mosher

May Chapter Events

DHS Protective Security Advisors discussed a myriad of items that DHS can provide and support industry. Some of the subjects discussed were Exercises and Training, Chemical Facilities, and Terrorism Standards.

On May 21, chapter members enjoyed a virtual Happy Hour with their
favorite beverage. Discussion was loose, lively, and with a lot of laughs. A
special shout out to Brandee Gary and Jon Gann for bringing trivia
questions. Be on the look out for our next social event.

Memorial Services for Officer Mike Mosher

On behalf of ASIS International Greater Kansas City Chapter we were sadden to learn about Officer Mike Mosher passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Mosher's family at this time.

MICHAEL S. MOSHER

Police Officer Mike Mosher was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a hit-and-run suspect.

Officer Mosher was off duty, but in his uniform while en route to work, when he witnessed the hit-and-run at West 143rd Street and Antioch Road. He called dispatchers as he followed the vehicle until it stopped near the intersection of West 123rd Street and Mackey Street.

The driver confronted Officer Mosher with a firearm, leading to a shootout. Officer Mosher and the subject were both killed in the shooting.

Officer Mosher had served with the Overland Park Police Department for 14-1/2 years. He is survived by his wife and child.

60th Anniversary 1960 - 2020

I hope that our members and their families are healthy and staying safe during these challenging times. A lot has changed since our last newsletter. The chapter board and committee chairs are continuing to plan and implement ASIS activities. We are still developing activities that can be accomplished safely during this pandemic, and planning for events for when this world event is over. Please stay connected and informed while we work through these difficult times and stay safe.

Bill Carroll (Chapter Vice Chair), Senior Investigator, AT&T Asset Protection hosted our March 5th luncheon discussing major security upgrades recently made the Entertainment Services facility located in Mission, Kansas and out of which AT&T Uverse, DTV and AT&T TV operations provide television services to the nation. This facility is considered a cash cow to AT&T producing income for the company in the range of $10 to $15 million an hour. Bill covered the process through which the security upgrades were proposed and changed to fit budget restraints. The attendees were given a tour of the operations in the building by a senior engineer within the video operations center of the facility.

Chapter Historian –

Attached is the newsletter from ten years ago, March 2000. There is a lot of interesting information and fun to see how things have changed. One item of note is, “The chapter debated and passed a resolution establishing a benevolence fund. The fund provides a $1,000 grant to Private Security Officers’ families in the event they are killed in the line of duty. The fund will be placed in a interest bearing account and will be replenished to the $1,000 level by the chapter, if necessary.” Does anyone remember this fund or have more information about it? All year we will be celebrating our 60th Anniversary. We are planning some very exciting events, so stay tuned. The board and committee chairs are working hard to put together innovative projects. Some items that we have already accomplished are:

Developing Challenge Coins for the Chapter

Combined the Law Enforcement Luncheon with Physical Security Showcase

NEWS FROM ASIS INTERNATIONAL

ASIS International W.I.S. mid-year event will be May 14^th at Facebook HQ (Menlo Park, CA). The website for this event will launch sometime in April-May. 20 W.I.S. members scholarships will be awarded for $1500 to cover room and airfare.

ASIS International HQ is launching a pilot with newly established ESRM Community. (HQ is wanting to switch from using the term Councils to Communities.) Goal is to begin rollout with current councils by the second quarter 2020.l

The Kansas City ASIS International Chapter will be holding its annual CPP Study session. The 5 sessions are spread over 2 months. Sessions will meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am. 2020 ASIS Foundation Scholarship or Grant Applications

Apply Now for a 2020 ASIS Foundation Scholarship or Grant

Applications for certification and academic scholarships, plus a P3 grant, will be accepted through 15 April 2020 via a new online scholarship portal. More than 40 awards are available including:

• Certification Scholarships for members pursuing their CPP, PCI, PSP or APP certification.

• Certification Scholarships for security professionals pursuing the CPO or CSSM certifications from IFPO. (in English or Spanish)

• Academic Scholarships for members of select chapters (see website for more details.)

• Public-Private Partnership Excellence Grant for law enforcement agencies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR KC ASIS!

On behalf of the new board, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. I’m hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season. Now that we are getting back to the grind, the board and I are excited to serve the chapter in 2020. I would like to personally thank the outgoing board, especially Theresa Bentch, for their service to the chapter and guidance during the board transition. We are excited to implement new initiatives, continue existing ones, and bring back some old ones. Of course, we cannot do it all by ourselves, we are going to need volunteers to assist with the multiple chapter committees.

Our next Luncheon, ASIS and YOU!, we are going to explore the different ways that ASIS benefits the security professional, and how chapter members can volunteer their time and talents to the local chapter and ASIS International. This is a very important meeting to start the new year off right. I would like encourage all chapter members to attend. To ensure full participation, the chapter member price will only be $15, instead of the normal $25.
