Training Presentation: Ukraine Incident Industrial Control System (ICS) Demo and Briefing

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have been actively working with the government of Ukraine and other U.S. Federal Government entities to understand the December 23, 2015 attacks against Ukrainian power infrastructure. These events represent one of the first known physical impacts to critical infrastructure which resulted from cyber-attack. The attacks leveraged commonly available tools and tactics against the control systems which could be used against infrastructure in every sector.  To increase awareness of the threat and provide additional context for the events in late 2015, ICS-CERT and the FBI will conduct unclassified in-person briefings as well as online webinars for asset owners and supporting personnel. The briefing sessions will provide details about the events surrounding the attack, techniques used by the threat actors, and strategies for mitigating risks and improving the cyber defensive posture of an organization.

    When: Thursday April 14, 2016 9am - 10am

Location: Kansas City, MO.  ** Additional details regarding the location/address of the briefing will be emailed with the confirmation of registration.  Please retain a copy of your registration confirmation to ensure entry to in-person briefings.

Registration: See attached for details.  Attendance is limited and approval will be based on association to critical infrastructure.  As guidance, only asset owners, supporting organizations, ICS vendors, and government personnel will be allowed to attend. Attached is the Official Invitation that includes the registration website at

Hello ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Members –

Both the March and April Luncheons had great turnout!  I’ve had several requests for copies of the presentations so both have been uploaded to our website under the Presentations page.

Spring is upon us with two great events - The Law Enforcement Appreciation on May 7th, which is our largest event and the 15th year that we will honor a police officer with the Thomas R. Meyers Award.  Please join us as we celebrate the relationships with law enforcement and ASIS.  If you want to know more about Thomas R. Meyers, please check out the Awards page.

Then on May 18th, the chapter is sponsoring the Putting Contest at the 11th Annual SAFE Golf Tournament.  This is an excellent opportunity for members to build membership for the chapter.  For more information check the Events section on the website.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact a Board member.
Summer will heat up with our second largest event – the 3rdAnnual Physical Security Showcase on June 11th.  This is a great opportunity to visit with various vendors about the latest trends in access controls, cameras, and other security technologies.  Attend breakout sessions and hear Chief Darryl Forte (keynote speaker) present on fighting crime with technology.  Earn up to 3 CPE credits!

Don’t forget the 15th Annual ASIS Greater Kansas City Golf Charity on August 12th.  Sign up solo...sign up a team...sponsor a hole...come out and support ASIS.  A portion of the proceeds goes to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Registration is open for all of the above events!

Please welcome Tim Kile (Strategos) as the co-Membership Chair.  He will be assisting David Brown with retaining and building membership.
Thank you to all of our volunteers who help to run the chapter!  We couldn’t do it without YOU!

    Some closing reminders –
The next meeting of the Board is April 17th (0730) @ the First Watch in Westport.

The Ralph Pusey Scholarship is still open accepting applications through May 1, 2015.  See the website for details.

Membership / guest drive campaign through September.  Winners are eligible for prizes.  See website for details.

A survey will be going out very soon to help us in developing the Holiday Event.

Mark your calendar for October 8th.  It’s our 55th anniversary and we are planning something special!

Our website is chocked full of information (webinars, meetings, events, etc.), so visit it often.

Don’t forget to check out the ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter on Facebook!
Sincerely, Wade Mathews - Chapter Chair

    ASIS GKC Members

Hello ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Members –

The Tour of the EOC was a huge success! There were 57 members and guests in attendance. The food was great (Jack Stacks for those who missed out), the tour was informative, and there were some awesome giveaways by our host, Jennifer Fales. The EOC is willing to put on a second tour for anyone who was interested and unable to attend due to conflicts. Look for something later this year.

The March Luncheon should be spectacular! Steve Baker is the Deputy CSO for Global Security at State Street (where I work) who is traveling from Boston to present on Security Assurance. Steve is an active member of ASIS on both the International and Chapter levels. He currently serves on the ASIS International Leadership Management Practices Council (LMPC) and is the LMPC representative to the Leadership Development Committee of the Chief Security Officers (CSO) Roundtable. He also presented as part of a panel discussion at the 2014 Annual ASIS Seminar. Don’t miss this one!

In other news, March is membership month. Members should try and bring a guest (or several) to the March Luncheon. ASIS International has several membership campaigns right now to encourage security practitioners to grow the membership. The ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter Board wants to extend a challenge to its members to help grow our chapter. From March through September, the member who brings in the most new members and the two (2) members who bring in the most guests will win prizes. Prizes will be revealed at a later date. Good luck!

On October 26, 2015, The Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission and local Law Enforcement are hosting the 2nd Annual Border Showdown – A Firearms Competition between Missouri and Kansas Law Enforcement. The KCMCC is considering the addition of a Security Professionals category. Qualified Security personnel would be required to have a current firearm certification through a law enforcement agency and be a current member of ASIS. If you or any qualified security officer would be interested in participating in this event, please contact a Board member of The ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter.

The Board is accepting applications for both the Ralph Pusey and University of Phoenix Scholarships. The criterion for both of these scholarships is on the chapter website.

Don’t forget to check out the ASIS Greater Kansas City Chapter on Facebook!

Sincerely, Wade A. Mathews - Chapter Chair
