Job Description

Colby Community College (CCC) is seeking a qualified full-time Director of Security to preserve the peace, provide general police services and enforce municipal, county, state, and federal laws, as well as the rules and regulations of CCC. The Director of Security helps establish a uniform police presence on campus and is responsible for campus law enforcement to ensure the protection of college personnel, students, property, and equipment. The Director of Security is required to work in all weather conditions, as well as varying hours and shifts both days and nights with periodic rotations and changes in work schedules, including being available for call back duty as required. The Director of Security encounters emergencies, as well as dangerous, potentially hazardous situations and materials, therefore this position must be proficient in the high liability skills as defined by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.

The role of the Director of Security is to be the first responder for all campus emergencies. The officer notifies the Emergency Response Team and other appropriate personnel accordingly. They will also contact the appropriate emergency agencies depending on situations and will assist the emergency agencies when they arrive on campus.

The Director of Security reports to the Dean of Student Affairs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Enforce the law courteously, tactfully, firmly, impartially and ethically.
  • Patrol assigned areas, assist students, staff and the public; observe infractions and/or violations taking action as appropriate.
  • Report unsafe or suspicious incidents taking appropriate action as necessary.
  • Report unsafe conditions such as obstructions on streets or sidewalks, holes, leaking or faulty utility services, or other unusual conditions that might endanger the public.
  • Respond to calls for service and investigate problems, disturbances, traffic accidents, crimes, emergencies, and other incidents; provide assistance and prepare related incident reports.
  • Perform regular security checks of all building and provide parking and traffic enforcement.
  • Conduct accident and crime investigations; prepare comprehensive, complete reports in clear and accurate detail noting observations and actions taken.
  • Provide security for various events.
  • Maintain proper care of weapons, radios, and other law enforcement equipment to ensure operational readiness
  • Educate and counsel students, faculty, and staff on crime prevention techniques and proper safety practices.
  • Prepare and preserve evidence in accordance with directives to maintain chain of custody; provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies as per mutual aid agreements;
  • Administer first aid as necessary and maintain current first responder certifications at all times.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and privacy according to college rule and the law.
  • Serve on both the Emergency Response Team and Crisis Management Committee.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Responsible for all Clery reporting and maintaining clear and accurate records for review each year.
  • Provide knowledge of Title IX and lead internal investigations
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TIME AND TRAVEL
This is a twelve (12) month position with some night and weekend work. While minimal, some travel is expected for this position.

SALARY
$44,500-$55,000, depending on credentials and experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent and must currently be certified as a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Five or more years’ experience serving in law enforcement.
  • Must maintain certifications and attend annual trainings.

Preferred

  • Associate degree in criminal justice or relevant field, and has knowledge of crime prevention and/or community policing concepts.
  • Experience working on a college campus.
